OLYMPIC CHAMPION AT BLAIR CASTLE INTERNATIONAL HORSE TRIALS
Olympic curling champion, Rhona Martin is to attend the Blair Castle International Horse Trials on Sunday 26th August 2007.
Rhona, who enthralled the nation at the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics in 2002, when she skipped the Great Britain Ladies curling team to victory, will be setting the two-legged runners off on the Blair Castle Cross Country Challenge on Sunday morning before spending time on the Bruadar stand.
Bruadar, the unique Sloe Malt Whisky Liqueur, the sponsor of the Country Fair are also sponsors of The Scottish Curling Championships. Rhona will spend time on Sunday at their stand where tastings will be free!!!
The Horse Trials take place from Thursday 23rd to Sunday 26th August and following on from the success of the inaugural challenge in 2006, this year’s run round the cross-country course will make better use of the hills providing a more interesting and challenging run.
Rhona and her team are the only British gold medalists at any winter Olympic sport apart from Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean in 1984. As a keen sportwoman, she will be encouraging all those taking part, whether it is the more serious 6km race, the 3.5km race or the 2km fun run.
Teams of three or four can be entered in all races, although teams in the 6km and 3.5km must be single sex. Entry fees range from £5 to £12 depending on age and which race but this includes entry to the Blair Castle International Horse Trials which normally costs £10 per adult and £4 for under 16’s. It is a scottishathletics Permit Event and will be run under UK Athletics rules.
Of course the big advantage of taking part in the Blair Castle Cross Country Challenge and Fun Run is the fact that once the hard work is done, and prizes received courtesy of Rugby Plus, competitors are free to enjoy the final day of the horse trials, including over 200 shops, a craft fair and food hall.
This year the event hosts the FEI European Young Rider Eventing Championships. There is showjumping in the main arena and some spectacular displays in the Bruadar Country Fair arena.
Competitors are encouraged to run and raise money for a charity of their choice but if unsure of which charity to support the organisers hope they will consider running for the horse trials nominated charity for 2007 – the Riding for the Disabled Association.
Sponsorship forms and entry forms can be downloaded from the website at www.blairhorsetrials.co.uk
