VALDEMAR VICTORIOUS IN CCI*

Hannah Bate won the CCI* riding Kaite Williams’ Valdemar, just hours before piloting Welton Rip Rap to 12th in the CCI***.

The 25year old from Cheshire led from the start with the 17hh Danish Warmblood / Thoroughbred gelding, starting with a confident, precise dressage test for a mark of 43.3. More…

Hot on her heels going into the cross-country were Kate Rocher (Alvescot Pushbutton) on 44.8, Sally Swiers (Eldmire Foxy Lady) on 46.1, and JP Sheffield (Riverside James) on 46.7.

The top four combinations all made short work of Ronald Alexander’s testing cross-country course, before Sally, JP and Helen Wilson, lying 5th overnight, produced copy-book show jumping clears to complete on their dressage scores. Two rails down proved costly for Kate Rocher, 2nd overnight, who dropped down the order to 5th place, below Helen Wilson.

Hannah Bate, jumping last, was under pressure to go clear, without a single fence in hand. She held her nerve, and kept Valdemar, whom she describes as ‘very sensitive’, flowing on for a neat clear.

Sixth place went to CCI*** winner Lucy Wiegersma, riding Matisse, whilst Jamie Atkinson (High Learchild), Ian Stark (Roman Lord), Christine Hardinge (Crown Amazonite) and Fiona Michaelides (The Other Man) all turned in double clears to complete the top ten places.

The Home International was won by the Old England team of Sally Swiers (Eldmire Foxy Lady), Jamie Atkinson (High Learchild), Nigel Taylor (Jedi Dancer) and Debbie Topping (Queens Counsel IV), on a total of 169.7. Sally, Jamie and Nigel all went clear inside the time across country, meaning they won convincingly despite 3 poles down in the show jumping.

Young England, comprising Lucy Wiegersma (Matisse), Catherine Cawdron (Flush Harry), Alan Townend (Measure for Measure) and JP Sheffield (Riverside James) were second on a combined total of 177.0. Third place, with 188.4, went to the Old Scotland team of Fiona Malcolm (Tee Pee), Minette Maclennan (Maximum Impact), Katie Robertson (American Law) and Ian Stark (Roman Lord). In fourth place was the Young Scotland team of Rose Macpherson (O Oklahoma), Louise Macdonald (Balblair Marina), Claire Simpson (What’s Happening Now) and Mandy McConechy (Red Cherry).
